Lacuna Coil est un groupe de heavy metal gothique italien créé à Milan, en Italie, en 1996. Ils furent d'abord connus sous le nom de Sleep of Right puis d'Ethereal.

Leur musique s'inspire du mouvement gothique, utilisant des lignes de guitare mélodieuses, alternant chant lourd et clair, avec une légère influence pop. D'après eux, le groupe est influencé par d'autres tels que Paradise Lost, Tiamat, Septic Flesh ou encore Type O Negative.

Le groupe fut formé en 1996 sous le nom de Sleep of Right, un nom qu'ils changèrent vite pour Ethereal, avant de signer pour Century Media à la fin de l'année 1997. Après s'être aperçus que le nom Ethereal était déjà utilisé, ils adoptèrent celui de Lacuna Coil ("spirale vide").

Le groupe, alors formé de deux chanteurs (Cristina Scabbia et Andrea Ferro) ainsi que du bassiste Marco Coti Zelati enregistra un album éponyme, paru en 1998 et soutenu par une tournée en Europe. La formation était accompagnée pour cette tournée du guitariste Cristiano Migliore et du batteur Cristiano Mozzati.

Après une seconde tournée européenne, le groupe enregistra un nouvel album, In a Reverie, et s'enrichit d'un second guitariste, Marco Biazzi. Le groupe assura la promotion de l'album grâce à une nouvelle tournée européenne au cours de laquelle il partageait la vedette avec le groupe de folk metal britannique Skyclad.

En 2002, le groupe sortit Comalies, un album qui reçut des acclamations et des critiques élogieuses de l'ensemble du monde du métal. Un an plus tard, le premier single tiré de cet album, Heavens a Lie, commença à recevoir l'attention des radios et des médias pour porter le groupe au premier plan de la scène musicale.
